Thanksgiving Day.
There is so much to be thankful for other than friends and family; the sun, the moon, air, wind, trees, water, oil, sleep, soil, insects, gravity, parades and of course turkey. Turkey, not the brightest animal in the world, but they are good food; full of protein and tryptophan.
November is a busy month for gardening. You can still harvest lettuce, Swiss chard, and kale. There is planting of trees and shrubs as well as garden clean up. It is also a time to take notes for your garden journal. I had planted garlic this month as well for the first time. I am anxious to see how that goes in the spring. I have also planted garlic (summer months) in my garden just to keep some of the rodents out of my crops. I believe this may have helped. I also believe this is the reason why my strawberries had not grown. (I had read it somewhere that strawberries do not grow well around garlic).
My most recent project is growing winterberry. I was able to get a cutting from a very generous family, friend and neighbor of mine. I have it planted in a pot of compost and vermiculite in my basement now. I am hoping for it to root in 4 – 6 weeks, however, I will not be able to plant it outside until spring. This is my first time experimenting, so I will check for roots and decide what to do next depending on my outcome.
